Why It Matters

A Missed Chimney Inspection & Cleaning Won't Warn You First

Creosote buildup, cracked liners, collapsed flue tiles, blocked dampers – none of these announce themselves. They build quietly behind walls and inside flues until there’s smoke in your living room, a fire in your attic, or carbon monoxide in your bedroom. By then the damage is done.

A CSIA-certified inspection catches them early – before they become emergencies. We use cameras, not guesswork, and we document every finding in writing so you have a clear picture of your chimney’s actual condition, not a verbal summary from someone with an incentive to sell repairs.

Some of these are annual maintenance. Others mean stop using the fireplace until a certified technician has looked at it.

What We Offer

Every Chimney Inspection & Cleaning Service We Offer

From your annual sweep before the first fire of the season to a full structural assessment after a chimney fire – every service is performed by CSIA-certified technicians to NFPA 211 standards, with written documentation on every visit.

Chimney inspection identifying smoke, carbon monoxide and fire hazard performance issues - safety inspection in Chicago, IL

Full removal of soot, creosote, and flue blockages using professional-grade rotary cleaning systems. Includes complete cleanup – we leave your home as clean as we found it, or cleaner.

Custom wood-burning masonry fireplace with glass door installation - fireplace upgrade by Midwest Chimney Specialists

Thorough cleaning of the firebox walls and floor, smoke shelf, damper assembly, and ash pit. The CSIA recommends this annually – creosote on the smoke shelf, smoke chamber and flue lining is a top cause of poor draft and smoke backing into the room.

Gas leak and fire hazard identified during Level 2 chimney inspection - gas leak repair in Chicago suburbs

Three inspection levels defined by NFPA 211 – each appropriate to different situations. Level 1 for annual maintenance, Level 2 when your situation has changed (new home, fuel change, home sale), Level 3 when concealed structural damage is suspected.

Level 2 chimney video inspection - CSIA-certified camera inspection service in Chicago suburbs

High-resolution camera scoping of the full flue interior. Cracks, liner damage, collapsed tiles, and blockages that are completely invisible to a flashlight and a mirror – documented on video and included in your written report.

Post-house fire Level 3 chimney inspection showing latent structural defects - Midwest Chimney Specialists

A chimney fire – even a small one – can crack the liner, compromise the structure, and create a pathway for the next fire to spread into the building. This inspection documents the full extent of damage and determines what’s needed before you light another fire.

Level 2 chimney inspection revealing vertical crack in chimney lining - fire damage inspection in Chicago, IL

Buying or selling a home with a fireplace in Chicagoland? A Level 2 with video documentation is the industry standard – increasingly required by attorneys and lenders. We turn reports around fast.

Chimney blockage creating carbon monoxide and fire hazard - chimney cleaning and obstruction removal in Chicago, IL

Bird and squirrel nests in an unprotected chimney block the flue completely – pushing carbon monoxide back into your home every time your furnace runs. We clear it, inspect for damage, and cap the chimney so it doesn’t happen again.

Can’t find what you’re looking for, or not sure which inspection you need? Give us a call at (630) 280-8285 or submit the form with the closest match and a short note about what’s going on. A description like ‘buying a house and the inspector flagged the chimney’ or ‘we heard birds in the flue last spring’ tells us more than a service name does. We’ll work out what’s actually needed before quoting anything.

What to expect

How Every Chimney Inspection & Cleaning Visit Works

Whether you’ve booked an annual sweep, a Level 2 inspection for a home sale, a post-fire assessment, or obstruction removal – every visit follows the same structured process. No surprises, no shortcuts.

1 Step

Book & Confirm

Call us or submit the form and we’ll confirm the right service for your situation – annual sweep, Level 2 for a home sale, post-fire assessment, or something else entirely. Same-week appointments available across Chicagoland, Monday through Saturday.

1 Step

2 Step

We Arrive & Protect Your Home

Your CSIA-certified technician arrives on time with all equipment. Floors and rugs are covered with drop cloths before we open the damper or bring anything into the room. Protecting your home is the first step – every time, without being asked.

2 Step

3 Step

Inspect The Full System

We inspect the entire chimney system – firebox, smoke chamber, damper, liner, crown, cap, and flashing. Where applicable, a high-resolution camera is run through the flue to document its interior condition. This happens before any cleaning or repair work begins, so we know exactly what we’re dealing with.

3 Step

4 Step

Service & Walk-Through

We carry out whatever was booked – sweeping the flue, cleaning the firebox and smoke chamber, removing a blockage or nest, or completing the full Level 2 video scope. Once done, the technician walks you through every finding in plain English: what’s a safety priority, what’s optional, and what’s perfectly fine. No jargon, no pressure.

4 Step

5 Step

Written Report Before We Leave

Every visit ends with a full written report documenting the condition of the system, every finding, and any recommended next steps – separated into what’s urgent and what can wait. Level 2 inspections include video footage. The report is formatted for insurance companies, real estate attorneys, and lenders – not just a handwritten notes sheet.

Questions We Hear The Most

Before You Book Your Chimney Inspection

Once a year at minimum - that's the NFPA recommendation, and it applies even if you barely use the fireplace. Unused chimneys still collect moisture, animal debris, and deteriorate structurally. If you've had a chimney fire, bought a new home, or changed fuel types, you need a Level 2 before the next use.

Level 1 is a standard visual inspection - appropriate for annual maintenance when nothing has changed. Level 2 adds camera scoping of the full flue and is required any time your situation has changed — new home, home sale, fuel type change, or after any event involving the chimney. Level 3 involves opening the structure and is only ordered when serious concealed damage is suspected from the Level 2 findings.

No. We protect floors and furniture before we start and remove all soot, ash, and debris before we leave. This comes up repeatedly in our reviews - not because we mention it, but because customers are genuinely surprised by it.

Yes - furnace and boiler flue sweeps are one of the most under-serviced areas in Chicagoland homes, especially in older buildings. A blocked furnace flue doesn't just reduce efficiency; it creates a direct carbon monoxide pathway. We handle both fireplace and heating appliance flues.

Yes. Animal nests, moisture infiltration, and structural deterioration don't care how often you light a fire. An unused chimney with a blocked flue is just as dangerous as an overused one - the carbon monoxide risk from your furnace flue is the same either way.

A full written inspection report on every visit. Level 2 inspections also include video footage of the flue interior. Both are formatted for use with insurance companies, real estate attorneys, and lenders - not just a notes sheet.

Don't light a fire. A nest in the flue is a complete blockage - lighting the fireplace pushes smoke and carbon monoxide back into the home and can ignite the nest. We remove the obstruction, inspect for any damage from the nesting, and install a cap to prevent recurrence.

Most appointments across our Chicagoland service area are available within the same week. We're available Monday through Friday 7AM - 5PM and Saturday 7AM - 3PM.
